DISCLAIMER:
This information is
for external/topical use purposes only and is not intended to replace
prescribed medication or professional medical advice or to diagnose any type of
health condition.
Never ingest essential
oils and remember to dilute them with a suitable carrier oil such as olive oil
or coconut oil. This is due to the fact that organic and pure essential oils
are highly concentrated liquids and direct use of essential oils on the skin
can cause allergic reactions. Caution should be taken if you are a
breastfeeding or pregnant mother. Keep out of reach of children.
Speak with your
healthcare practitioner before selecting an essential oil that is appropriate
for your health situation and unique individual constitution.
USES AND
BENEFITS:
• The main
constituents of Peppermint essential oil are Menthol, Menthone, and
1,8-Cineole, Menthyl acetate, Isovalerate, Pinene, Limonene and other
constituents. Menthol is known as an analgesic which is useful for reducing
pain such as headaches, muscle aches and inflammation. Meanwhile, the menthone
content in peppermint shows antiseptic activity.
• Peppermint Essential
Oil has the potential to eliminate harmful bacteria, relieve muscle spasms and
flatulence, disinfect and soothe inflamed skin, and release muscle tension when
used in massage. When diluted with a carrier oil and applied to the feet, it
can serve as an effective natural fever reducer.
• Cosmetically or
topically, Peppermint can act as an astringent that closes pores and tightens
the skin.
• Its cool and warm
sensation makes it an effective anesthetic that numbs the skin to pain and
soothes redness and inflammation.
• Traditionally, this
oil has been used as a cooling chest rub to relieve nasal congestion, and when
diluted with a carrier oil such as coconut, can promote safe and healthy skin
renewal, thereby relieving skin irritations such as sunburn.
• Combining peppermint
oil with shampoo can stimulate the scalp while eliminating dandruff.
• Aromatherapy-wise,
peppermint oil has expectorant properties that can help clear the nasal
passages to help relieve nasal congestion and make breathing easier.
• The aroma of
peppermint oil can stimulate circulation, reduce feelings of nervous tension,
calm feelings of irritability, increase energy, balance hormones, and improve
mental focus.
• This oil has analgesic properties that can help suppress appetite and increase feelings of fullness. If diluted and inhaled or rubbed a little behind the ear, this digestive oil can reduce nausea.
• Peppermint oil's anti-microbial properties can be used as a cleaning solvent to clean and deodorize the environment, leaving a trail of fresh and cheerful aroma. Not only will it disinfect surfaces, but it will also eliminate insects in the home and serve as an effective insect repellent[8,9,10,11,12,13].

DESCRIPTION:
Mentha (also known as
peppermint), a genus of plants in the taxonomic family Lamiaceae (mint family),
is widespread throughout temperate regions of the world. Our Peppermint
piperita essential oil is obtained from the extraction of Mentha piperita
leaves and twigs using the steam distillation method. The oil produced is a
colorless liquid and has a distinctive fresh and strong peppermint aroma.
Peppermint oil has the main components consisting of menthol, menthone which is
a volatile metabolite compound with biological activities including
anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, scolicidal, immunomodulatory,
antitumor, neuroprotective, antiphathetic and antioxidant. Much evidence shows
that peppermint oil can pharmacologically protect the gastrointestinal, liver,
kidney, skin, respiratory, brain and nervous systems, and exert hypoglycemic
and hypolipidemic effects[1,2,3].
BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
The mentha genus has
25-30 species that develop in Eurasia, Australia and South Africa. In Indonesia
there are 6 types of mentha, namely M. piperita, M. arvensis, M. spicata, M.
crispa, M. canadensis and M. viridis. There are 3 types of mentha oil that are
most widely circulated on the world market, namely: Peppermint (oil from M.
piperita), cornmint (oil from M. arvensis), and spearmint (oil from M.
spicata).
Mentha piperita L.
(Lamiaceae) is a herb, 30-90 cm high. Stems erect square, branched, the top is
always rectangular. The leaves are opposite, petiolate, ovaleoblong
(oblong-lanceolate), serrated and dark green on the upper surface. Purplish
flowers, each 5 flowers show tubular petals with 5 sharp, hairy, and irregular
serrations, 4-corolla clefts, 4 short stamens, a 4-celled ovary ending in a
split stigma.
The main constituent
of the leaves is essential oil (0.5-4%), which contains menthol (30-55%) and
menthone (14-32%). Menthol occurs mostly in alcohol-free form, with small
amounts as (3-5%) acetate and valerate esters. Other monoterpenes present
include isomenthone (2-10%), 1,8-cineole (6-14%), a-pinene (1.0-1.5%), b-pinene
(1-2%), limonene (1-5%), neomenthol (2.5-3.5%) and menthofuran (1-9%)[4,5,6].
HISTORY:
Peppermint is a
perennial herb native to the Mediterranean but has also been cultivated in the
United States, Italy, Great Britain, and Japan. It can be recognized by its
serrated leaves and flowers that vary in color from light pink to light purple,
growing in a cone shape.
Peppermint essential
oil is said to be one of the most versatile oils in the world, along with
Lavender oil. This oil is widely used for the skin and mouth because of its
anti-microbial properties. Peppermint has a fresh, sharp aroma comparable to
Menthol, and this versatile oil component is used internationally in the
cosmetic, culinary and health industries.
Peppermint has been
used in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine. In Ancient Egyptian times,
dried Peppermint leaves were used in tombs in the pyramids. Due to the frequent
use of the name Peppermint interchangeably with the terms Mint and Spearmint,
there is confusion regarding the history of its cultivation, but ancient text
references prove that peppermint has been used for culinary and herbal
medicinal purposes since 1500 BC. Peppermint is also mentioned in Greek
mythology in the story of the nymph “Mentha” or “Minthe,” who turned into a
sweet-smelling herb that gave off a strong, lingering aroma whenever it was
stepped on.
Peppermint is one of hundreds of species that belong to the Mint family of plants or the Mint “genus”. Included in this genus are herbs such as Spearmint, Water Mint, and Forest Mint. Peppermint is considered a natural hybrid of Water Mint (M. Aquatica) and Spearmint (M. spicata)[7].
