DESCRIPTION:
Mentha (also known as
peppermint), a genus of plants in the taxonomic family Lamiaceae (mint family),
is widespread throughout temperate regions of the world. Our Spearmint
essential oil is obtained from the extraction of Mentha spicata leaves via the
steam distillation method. The resulting oil is a colorless to pale yellow
liquid and has a distinctive fresh peppermint aroma. Spearmint oil has the main
components of carvone and limonene, which are volatile metabolite compounds
with biological activities including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial,
antiviral, scolicidal, immunomodulatory, antitumor, neuroprotective,
antiphathetic and antioxidant. Much evidence shows that peppermint oil can
pharmacologically protect the gastrointestinal, liver, kidney, skin,
respiratory, brain and nervous systems, and exert hypoglycemic and
hypolipidemic effects[1,2,3].

GLANCE:
Mentha is a genus in
the Lamiaceae family that has over 30 different species and a variety of
hybrids. Generally grows for 2000 years in temperate or subtropical climates.
Subtropical to tropical locations are suitable for cultivation, with
concentrations of the species' varieties being in Europe and Southeast and
North Asia.
In Indonesia there are
6 types of mentha, namely M. piperita, M. arvensis, M. spicata, M. crispa, M.
canadensis and M. viridis. There are 3 types of mentha oil that are most widely
circulated on the world market, namely: Peppermint (oil from M. piperita),
cornmint (oil from M. arvensis), and spearmint (oil from M. spicata) of these
three types of oil are most likely developed in Indonesia is cornmint oil which
comes from M. arvensis because this type does not require a day length of more
than 12 hours to flower. Flowering of plants (60-70% of the plant population)
is an indicator of the right time to harvest.
Peppermint generally
grows best in moist, shady areas and grows with underground rhizomes. Young
shoots are taken from the old stock and dug into the ground at a distance of
about 0.5 m (1.5 ft). They grow quickly and cover the soil with runners if it
is permanently moist[4,5,6].
HISTORY:
Peppermint is a
perennial herb native to the Mediterranean but has also been cultivated in the
United States, Italy, Great Britain, and Japan. It can be recognized by its
serrated leaves and flowers that vary in color from light pink to light purple,
growing in a cone shape.
Peppermint essential
oil is said to be one of the most versatile oils in the world, along with
Lavender oil. This oil is widely used for the skin and mouth because of its
anti-microbial properties. Peppermint has a fresh, sharp aroma comparable to
Menthol, and this versatile oil component is used internationally in the
cosmetic, culinary and health industries.
Peppermint has been
used in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine. In Ancient Egyptian times,
dried Peppermint leaves were used in tombs in the pyramids. Due to the frequent
use of the name Peppermint interchangeably with the terms Mint and Spearmint,
there is confusion regarding the history of its cultivation, but ancient text
references prove that peppermint has been used for culinary and herbal
medicinal purposes since 1500 BC. Peppermint is also mentioned in Greek
mythology in the story of the nymph “Mentha” or “Minthe,” who turned into a
sweet-smelling herb that gave off a strong, lingering aroma whenever it was
stepped on.
Peppermint is one of hundreds of species that belong to the Mint family of plants or the Mint “genus”. Included in this genus are herbs such as Spearmint, Water Mint, and Forest Mint. Peppermint is considered a natural hybrid of Water Mint (M. Aquatica) and Spearmint (M. spicata)[7].
