DESCRIPTION:
Pine (Pinaceae), has
more than 110 known species. Pine is a gymnosperm plant which is the main
producer of raw materials for the paper and pulp industry. Apart from that,
pine is also a producer of gondorukem and turpentine.
Pine is the largest
extant genus of conifers and one of the most important sources of essential
oils worldwide. Our pine oil is obtained from the extraction of pine needles by
steam distillation method. The oil produced is a colorless to pale yellow liquid.
This oil has a fresh and strong spinous aroma. The main components in pine oil
are α-pinene, β-pinene, camphene, 3-carene, and myrcene. Essential oils from
pine species have been used for various applications since centuries[1,2,3].
BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
Pinus sylvestris,
Scots pine (UK), Scotch pine (USA) or Baltic pine is a species of tree in the
pine family Pinaceae native to Eurasia. Pinus sylvestris can be easily
recognized by the combination of its fairly short, blue-green leaves and
orange-red bark. Pinus sylvestris is an evergreen coniferous tree that grows to
a height of 35 meters (115 ft) and a trunk diameter of 1 m (3 ft 3 in) at
maturity, reaching over 45 m (148 ft) in height and a trunk diameter of 1.7 m (
5+1⁄2 feet) in highly productive locations. The tallest record is a tree over
210 years old growing in Estonia at 46.6 m (153 ft). Age is typically 150-300
years, with the oldest specimen recorded in Lapland, Northern Finland at over
760 years[4,5,6].
HISTORY:
Pine Trees are easily
recognized as "Christmas Trees", but are also commonly cultivated for
their wood. Pine wood is rich in resin and therefore ideal for use as fuel, as
well as for making pitch, tar and turpentine, substances traditionally used in
construction and painting. In folklore, the height of the Pine tree led to its
symbolic reputation as a tree that loves sunlight and always grows taller to
catch blocks. This is a belief held by many cultures, who also refer to him as
the "Lord of Light" and the "Torch Tree". Therefore, in the
Corsica region it is burned as a spiritual offering in order to emit a source
of light. In some Native American tribes, the tree is called "The Watchman
of the Sky."
Historically, pine tree needles were used as mattress filler, as they were believed to have the ability to protect against fleas. In ancient Egypt, pine seeds, better known as Pine Nuts, were used in culinary applications. Needles were also chewed to protect against scurvy. In ancient Greece, Pine is believed to have been used by physicians such as Hippocrates to treat respiratory ailments. For other applications, tree bark is also used for its believed ability to reduce cold symptoms, relieve inflammation and headaches, soothe wounds and infections, and relieve respiratory discomfort. Today, pine oil continues to be used for similar therapeutic benefits. It is also a popular scent in cosmetics, toiletries, soaps, and detergents[7].
