DESCRIPTION:
Zingiber purpureum /
Bangle / Plai is a medicinal plant widely cultivated in Asia and its essential
oil has been reported for several biological activities, such as
anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-oxidant effects. Our Bangle Oil is
obtained from the extraction of Zingiber purpureum rhizomes using the steam
distillation method. The resulting oil is a colorless to pale yellow liquid and
produces a distinctive bangle aroma.
Ethnic Indonesians use
the Bangle / Plai plant as a laxative for fever, jaundice and headaches. In
various scientific publications, Z. montanum is also known as Z. cassumunar or
Z. purpureum, so it is a synonym, that is, one species has more than one scientific
name. Plai essential oil has long been used by Thai massage therapists for its
powerful pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, rejuvenating and calming
properties[1,2,3].
BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
Bangle or Zingiber
montanum (Koenig) Dietrich is a type of the Zingiberaceae family which is used
as medicine. Zingiber montanum is synonymous with Zingiber purpureum and
Zingiber cassumunar. The Zingiber purpureum plant grows in Asia, especially
tropical areas, from India to Indonesia. In Java it is widely planted in low
areas up to an altitude of 1,300 meters above sea level. Plants with the
regional names banglai (Sumatra), bengle (Java), panglai (Sunda), banggele
(Bali).
Zingiber montanum has
the following characteristics: pale orange rhizomes on the inside. The
pseudostem is built by leaf midribs with a height of 1.2-1.8 m. The leaf sheath
is glabrous with hairs near the tip, with bilobed ligules about 2 mm long. The
leaf blades are ribbon-shaped with leaves 20-35 cm x 2-4 cm long with a
pubescent lower surface. The fusiform or cylindrical ovoid flowers measure
10-16 cm x 3-3.5 cm, the apical part stands upright and is 20-25 cm long.
Bracktea are ovate, 3-3.5 cm pubescent, brownish green in color. Bracteoles are
1-1.5 cm long. The crown and labellum are pale yellow, 6 cm long with lobes in
the middle [4,5,6].
HISTORY:
Zingiber cassumunar,
is now considered a synonym of Zingiber montanum which is a plant species in
the ginger family and also a relative of galangal. It is called plai in
Thailand. The rhizome of the 'Roxburgh' variant is used medicinally in massage
and even in food in Thailand, and is somewhat similar to ginger or galangal
root.
In aromatherapy, plai oil is used as an essential oil and is believed to relieve pain and inflammation. A Japanese study from 1991 showed (E)-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)but-1-ene, the active ingredient of Z. cassumunar rhizomes, to have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, an American study found that plai oil showed antimicrobial activity against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, dermatophytes, and yeast. A study also showed that the essential oil of Z. cassumunar has anti-microbial activity against XDR Acinetobacter baumannii and synergizes with medically useful antibiotics.
Finally, a 1992 study found zerumbone contained in the plant's rhizomes had antifungal properties against pathogenic fungi. Until now, plai oil continues to be developed and used in aromatherapy [7].
