BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:

The Asteraceae family includes about 1000 genera and 30,000 species, which are distributed throughout the world, of which about 177 genera and 1052 species are found in India. Genus Saussurea DC. of the same family includes about 300 species in the world of which about 61 species occur in India. Some of the common and ethnomedically important species of this genus found in India such as Saussurea costus (Falc.) Lipschitz, syn Saussurea lappa C.B. Clarke, one of the most famous species of this genus, is commonly known as costus in English and has different vernacular names in India such as, Kut (Gujrati), Kur (Bengali), Postkhai (Kashmiri), Sepuddy (Malayalam), Kot (Punjabi), Kushta (Sanskrit), Costume (Tamil), Kustam (Telgu), Kushta (Marathi), Koshta (Kannada), Kuth (Hindi), and Qusthul Hindi (Indonesian).

S. costus is a hardy, erect, perennial herb covered with short, soft hairs (pubescent) with stems 1–2 m tall. The leaves are large at the base, from 0.5 to 1.25 m, membranous, irregularly toothed, rough from the upper surface, smooth from the lower, and leaf-wavy at the base. The upper leaves are smaller; most are stalkless. The flowers are round, hard, purple, 2.4–4.0 cm in diameter, and are clustered in groups of 2 to 5 at the tips or leaf axils. The flower crown is 2 cm long, tubular with long and smooth Pappas about 1.7 cm in the fruiting flower head. The roots are about 40 cm long and dark brown. The fruits are curved, hairy, compressed, and concave in shape found in S. costus [4,5,6].

HISTORY:

S. costus is known for its extensive use as a carminative, expectorant, antiarthritic, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, anodise, and anthelmintic in various traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda, Tibetan, Unani, Siddha, and Chinese about 2500 years ago. Traditionally, S. costus is used to relieve pain due to abdominal convexity, tenesmus, anorexia, vomiting, and dysentery. The roots of S. costus have long been used in traditional Chinese, Indian, and Japanese medicine to treat asthma, viral infections, arthritis, paralysis, diarrhea, indigestion, cholecystitis, cough, and hepatitis.

In Ayurvedic medicine, the roots are widely used to improve skin color, cure Leucoderma, scabies, flatulence, itching, ringworm, epilepsy, vomiting, headache, hysteria, and even tridosha blood diseases.

In the Unani system of medicine, the roots are used as a carminative, aphrodisiac, anthelmintic, and to cure liver, kidney, and blood diseases.

In India, S. costus has traditionally been used as a single drug or in pharmaceutical formulations. In worm infestation, tuberculosis, rheumatism, intestinal carcinogenesis, convulsions, leprosy, and colds, several formulations of S. costus have been recommended. However, the roots and root stalks have been used for skin diseases, toothache, dysentery, rheumatism, and to treat heart problems in cattle.

Costus root oil is used in high-end perfumery, hair products, and is efficacious in preventing leprosy. In India, people in the Himalayan region use the root oil to protect shawls and woollen cloth from insects[7,8].
