DESCRIPTION:
Ravintsara Essential
Oil comes from the leaves of the Camphor tree, which is an evergreen,
broad-leaved plant native to Asia. They are known for their dark and light
green leaves, which give off a distinctive camphoraceous odor when crushed.
Our ravintsara oil is
obtained from extracting camphor leaves using the steam distillation
method. The oil produced is a colorless
liquid. Ravintsara oil has a high concentration of 1,8-Cineole, which gives it
its characteristic aroma. Ravintsara essential oil can be used as an immune
stimulant and a potent antiviral and anti-infective agent. Thanks to its very
wide spectrum of action, it is recommended for preventing and treating all
forms of viral infections, especially respiratory – colds, flu, chills, pharyngitis,
laryngitis, bronchitis, rhinopharyngitis – along with seasonal gastroenteritis
(always viral), herpes and herpes zoster[1 ,2,3].
BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
Cinnamomum camphora
originates from China south of the Yangtze River, Taiwan, southern Japan,
Korea, and Vietnam, and has been introduced to many other countries. Cinnamomum
camphora (commonly known as camphor tree or camphor wood) is a large evergreen
tree that grows to 20–30 m (66–98 ft) tall. The leaves have a shiny, waxy
appearance and smell like camphor when crushed. In spring, C. camphora produces
bright green leaves with masses of small white flowers. C. camphora produces
clusters of black, berry-like fruit about 1 cm (0.39 in) in diameter[4,5,6].
HISTORY:
The Malagasy people,
or the indigenous people of Madagascar, highly value and respect the ravintsara
tree, and this is evident from the origin of the word ravintsara. In Malagasy,
ravintsara translates to "tree with good leaves", derived from the
Malagasy words ravint meaning "leaf" and sara meaning "good for
you". The leaves of the tree have long been used in the central highlands
of Madagascar as a traditional medicine. Tea made from the leaves is often used
as a household help in times of need. And ravintsara can also be rubbed on the
chest or the leaves can be steamed and the steam inhaled. Traditional beliefs
say that ravintsara can also be used to remove the evil eye and stimulate the
spirit in a positive way. Also, some beliefs reveal that ravintsara allows
passage into the subconscious. And finally, to help clear the room, the leaves
are also traditionally burned.
The tree is not only used in health practices, but the Malagasy people even find a place for it in their cuisine. The leaves are sometimes used as a spice and in certain specialties. As evidenced by the name given and the traditional use they have for the ravintsara tree, the Malagasy people have given the tree a noble status. For centuries, ravintsara trees have been planted in the estates of Madagascar's noble families, and when French colonists came to Madagascar in the late 1800s, they noticed how much the Malagasy revered ravintsara leaves. Taking a cue from the natives, the French colonists also began to hold the tree in high esteem and began planting ravintsara trees in the grounds of their hospitals and missions[7,8].
