Rose oil is widely used as an anti-aging, skin softener, skin care ingredient, tightening and refreshing the skin. The strong aroma of rose oil is an aphrodisiac and is used to relieve stress and depression[1,2,3,4].

BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:

Rose (Rosa hybrida) is a popular ornamental flower plant because of its beauty and fragrant flowers. Roses are ornamental flower plants in the form of herbs with thorny stems. Roses are not native to Indonesia, this plant comes from the plains of China.

In its development, rose plants have spread widely in various regions, including Indonesia. In Indonesia, roses are enjoyed as cut flowers or used for traditional ceremonies and as scattering flowers. The classification of roses is division: spermathopyta, class: dycotiledonae, order: rosales, family: rosaceae, genus: rosa, species: Rosa hybrida.

Hybrid roses come from roses that are the result of crossbreeding various rose species, such as Rosa damascena, Rosa centifolia, and other roses that are produced to increase the aroma, oil content, and durability of the plant.

Rose plants are generally shrubs with thorny stems, plant heights between 0.3 and 0.5 meters. Taproots with many root branches like fibers and hair roots that resemble threads. Rose leaves are compound leaves with 3 or 5 alternating and odd-pinnate. Some flowers are single and some are beautifully arranged in an umbrella shape with 4-5 flower ornaments in each circle. The color of the flowers varies from white, red, pink and light purple. Rose fruit is a fruit that contains seeds.

Roses are harvested after 4-5 months depending on the variety and growth rate. Roses can be harvested when all the flower petals have opened all 1 or 2 crowns have opened. The freshness of the flowers will last longer if harvested at the right growth stage. Roses if harvested at the full bloom stage will not last long and will quickly wilt and conversely if harvested too early can cause the flower buds to fail to bloom [5,6,7].

HISTORY:

For thousands of years, Roses have been synonymous with love, beauty, pleasure, celebration, and spiritual worship. The special status of Roses in society has given rise to the moniker that is indeed worthy of being the 'Queen of Flowers' of the world.

Hybrid rose oil, as we know it today, developed from a long process of selection and hybridization between various species of roses. Early known roses such as Rosa gallica and Rosa damascena originated in the Middle East and Central Asia. These species are known for their distinctive scents that have been used in perfumes and essential oils since ancient times. An important development occurred when the Chinese rose (Rosa chinensis) was introduced to Europe in the late 18th century. This rose had the ability to bloom repeatedly throughout the season, which was later combined with European varieties such as Rosa gigantea. This hybrid became known as the tea rose because of its scent similar to Chinese tea. From this hybrid, many modern rose varieties developed, including the hybrid tea rose, which dominates the flower market today because of its large and long-lasting flowers [8,9,10].
