DESCRIPTION:

The name "Rosewood" refers to a medium-sized Amazonian tree with pink or brownish wood. Rosewood is commonly used for cabinet making and marquetry (a particular form of inlay work) due to its unique color. Rosewood is used as a source of essential oil, which is rich in linalool which can be used in various applications such as pharmacological and food. Our rosewood oil is obtained from the extraction of the inner wood of the Aniba rosaeodora tree by steam distillation. The resulting oil is colorless to pale yellow with a characteristic, pink, sweet, slightly floral aroma. It is also known as Bois de Rose Essential Oil, Brazilian Rosewood Oil, and ‘Pau-Rosa’ Oil. It is rich in biological activities such as antioxidants, antimicrobials, and antifungals[1,2,3].

BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:

Aniba rosaeodora Ducke, Lauraceae is a large tree that can reach up to 30 m in height, with yellow-brown bark (hence the name rosewood). It is native to Amazonia and is highly sought after in French Guiana for its essential oil. Rosewood essential oil is widely used in the perfumery industry and its extraction for industrial purposes began in the interior of the state of Pará, Brazil, around 1930. All parts of the tree are fragrant, although only the heartwood is harvested and distilled with water to obtain rosewood oil, a valuable product. This species has been used in the Amazon as a medicinal plant to control epileptic seizures, to make regional perfumes and as an ornamental plant. However, this species is endangered and plantation cultivation is beginning to be considered a financially viable commercial option. In addition, plantations can be a means to reduce the pressure of exploitation of natural sewood populations. Management of planted trees is the only way to meet the demand for this forest product and ensure the conservation of this species in its natural habitat [4,5,6].

HISTORY:

Rosewood trees grow naturally in the rainforests of Brazil and are known to grow to a lesser extent throughout Africa. The tree was first discovered by botanists in the Amazon rainforest in 1925. Rosewood is considered globally endangered, although India still has enough trees growing there that they can still obtain a certain amount of this valuable wood each year.

The wood has long been prized as a valuable and luxurious wood used in many luxurious Chinese furniture pieces, often sold to the elite for very high prices. The French have long prized this hardwood for making cabinets and handles for knives and brushes.

Rosewood also has a long history of use in the perfumery industry. Unfortunately, up to 60% of Rosewood is wasted when harvested. The trunk is often the only thing taken and used from a Rosewood tree with all the branches typically left behind. This is unfortunate because the young branches of the Rosewood tree contain most of the essential oils in the tree.

Rosewood, known for its sweet and refreshing woody scent, has been used in the perfume industry since the 19th century. This oil is highly valued for its elegant scent and ability to improve perfume compositions. Traditionally, rosewood oil has been used in herbal medicine, especially in Brazil and South America, to treat various skin and respiratory problems.

Over time, the Aniba rosaeodora tree has become increasingly threatened by overexploitation, especially in Brazil, where it is found in abundance. This is due to the high demand for its oil in the perfume industry. In 1992, rosewood was included in CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), which restricts the trade of rosewood oil in order to protect the tree species from extinction. Several initiatives to produce rosewood oil sustainably have been undertaken, including the planting of new trees and the use of more environmentally friendly alternatives[7,8].
