DESCRIPTION:

The valuable part of the sandalwood tree is the heartwood. Older trees have more heartwood and are more valuable than young sandalwood trees which produce lower quality oil.

Our sandalwood essential oil is obtained from the extraction of the heartwood of the Santalum Album tree originating from Aceh Sumatra by the steam distillation method. The resulting oil is a colorless to golden yellow liquid with a distinctive, woody, and persistent aroma. In aromatherapy, Sandalwood essential oil is used to calm the mind, increase feelings of peace and clarity, and improve mood and sensual feelings[1,2,3].

BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:

Sandalwood (Santalum album L.) was originally thought to originate from India, because natural stands of sandalwood were found in the Mysore area and its surroundings, in southern India. Most botanists generally believe that sandalwood trees originate from the Indonesian archipelago, namely the Outer Banda Arc of Islands located in Southeast Indonesia, and the main ones are the islands of Timor and Sumba.

The history of sandalwood trade in the past also supports that sandalwood trees are native to East Nusa Tenggara, especially on the islands of Timor and Sumba. These sandalwood trees (both in natural forests and in plantation forests) can now be found in Bondowoso Regency (East Java), Sulawesi, Maluku and as far north as Australia.

The existence of sandalwood growing in India, related to the sandalwood trade in the past, which was then brought to India, and developed in India in areas with climates and habitats such as in East Nusa Tenggara, especially on the islands of Timor and Sumba

Botanically, sandalwood plants are included in the genus Santalum, a name thought to originate from the Sanskrit word candana or Chandana referring to sandalwood/incense wood, the Persian word Sandal, meaning useful; Middle Ages Latin word sandalum; ancient Greek word sántalon, 'sandalwood', all referring to fragrant wood.

Santalum is included in the Santalaceae family, which consists of about 44 genera and 1100 species that are mostly distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, but slightly extending to temperate regions of the world. Sandalwood grows naturally up to an altitude of 1500 m above sea level, and the best wood quality can be obtained if sandalwood lives at an altitude of between 600-900 m. Sandalwood requires a lot of sunlight and is often found growing well in open deciduous forests and on the edge of the forest. Long-term heating with high sunlight intensity causes a lot of the sapwood to peel off, especially in old trees; high temperatures can also kill newly germinated seedlings. As a result of the peeling of sapwood in old sandalwood trees, the exposed wood will be visible. [4,5,6].

HISTORY:

Sandalwood is a luxurious essential oil with a very soft, sweet, woody aroma that is characteristic of oriental perfumes and incenses. Sandalwood oil is derived from the heartwood of trees in the genus Santalum. Sandalwood oil is one of the most expensive oils in the world because the tree is very slow growing, taking decades to mature before it can be harvested for oil production.

There are approximately 30 species of sandalwood trees found throughout Asia, Australia, and the Pacific, but only a few are widely used for essential oils. East Indian Sandalwood from the Santalum album tree is the classic source of essential oil, still considered to be of the finest quality. However, due to aggressive overharvesting, this species is now endangered and its oil production is limited. Efforts are underway to increase sustainable cultivation of East Indian Sandalwood.

The use of sandalwood has been documented as far back as 4000 years ago, originating in India and spreading through ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Sandalwood oil has many applications that include aesthetic, practical, and spiritual. Ancient Arabs used crushed sandalwood to make incense and solid perfumes, while in China, Tibet and Nepal, the thick, strong wood was used to make statues in temples and monasteries. East Indian sandalwood oil has further been used in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for centuries, as part of the treatment of the common cold, muscular and digestive problems, infections, inflammation and to address mental health.

Spiritually, the ancients were fond of building temples and other sacred structures with sandalwood, the Egyptians used it in embalming and religious rituals, and Indian Muslims burned it as incense to elevate the souls of the recently deceased. Sandalwood still plays an important role in Indian spiritual rituals, as it is considered an aid to meditation and is often burned on altars as a means of divine communication.

In Buddhist practice, it is considered one of the three integral incenses, along with Agarwood and Clove. Today, sandalwood remains one of the most commercially valuable trees, although its use has been drastically reduced due to over-harvesting and is now primarily used to produce oil. Incredibly rich and creamy, Sandalwood essence is so highly prized and expensive that it is often referred to as “liquid gold”, appearing frequently in high-end perfumes and cosmetics. It is also one of the most valuable aromatherapy oils, renowned for its extraordinary fragrance and renowned benefits[7].
