DESCRIPTION:
As an agricultural country, Indonesia has
an abundance of potential plants and plantations. One of them is shallots
(Allium Ascalonicum L.) which have medicinal properties for breathing and
inflammation.
Our shallot essential oil is obtained from
the extraction of Allium Ascalonicum L. (Shallot) seeds / bulbs using the steam
distillation method. The resulting oil is yellow to brown in color and has a
fresh shallot aroma. Its bioactivity content has been widely proposed by
researchers such as antioxidants, antibacterials, antimicrobials, and so on.
Its use in aromatherapy for room fragrances and for massage oils [1,2,3].
BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:
Shallots (Allium ascalonicum L.) are plants
originating from Central Asia. This plant is often used as a flavoring in
cooking. In addition, shallots also contain nutrients and compounds that are
classified as non-nutritional substances and enzymes that are useful for
therapy, and can improve and maintain human health.
Shallots are one of the many types of
onions in the world. Shallots (Allium ascalonicum L.) are annual plants that
form clumps and grow upright with a height of 15-40 cm. The physical morphology
of shallots can be divided into several parts, namely roots, stems, leaves,
flowers, fruits and seeds. Shallots have fibrous roots with a shallow root
system and scattered branches, at a depth of 15-20 cm in the soil with a root
diameter of 2-5 mm. Shallots have true stems that are shaped like discs, thin,
and short as attachments for roots and buds, above the disc (discus) there is a
pseudo stem composed of leaf sheaths and different stems in the soil change
shape and function into bulbs. The leaves of the red onion are cylindrical in
shape, small and elongated between 50-70 cm, hollow and pointed at the ends,
light to dark green in color, and the leaves are attached to relatively short
stalks, while the red onion flowers emerge from the tip of the plant (growing
point) which is between 30-90 cm long, and at the tip there are 50-200 flower
buds arranged in a circle as if forming an umbrella. Each flower consists of
5-6 white petals, 6 green or yellowish stamens, 1 pistil and an almost
triangular fruit. The red onion fruit is round with a blunt tip wrapping 2-3
seeds. Red onion seeds are flat, white in color, but will turn black when old
[4,5,6,7,8].
HISTORY:
Shallots have a flavor combination of garlic and onion, although their flavor is milder. Although shallots are closely associated with traditional French recipes, such as Beef Bourguignon, shallots are an international vegetable. They are a native ingredient in many Asian cuisines, from Thai soups and red and green curries to Indonesian dishes such as fried rice. According to a study conducted by Srisawat et al. in the Khao Luang Mountain Hill Region of Southern Thailand, shallots are used as a traditional medicine for lipoma. The leaves of shallots are pounded and used as a poultice, or applied externally. Additionally, it has been reported that in Ibarapa Local Government Area of Oyo State, the local name for Nigerian shallots is “Alubosa elewe” and is often used to treat onchocerciasis, a neglected tropical disease listed by the World Health Organization[9,10].
