DISCLAIMER:
This information is for topical use only
and is not intended to replace prescription medications or professional medical
advice or to diagnose any health condition.
Never swallow essential oils and remember to dilute them with a suitable carrier oil such as olive oil or coconut oil. This is due to the fact that organic and pure essential oils are highly concentrated liquids and direct application of essential oils to the skin may cause allergic reactions. Caution should be taken if you are a nursing or pregnant mother. Keep out of reach of children.
Speak to your healthcare practitioner before selecting an essential oil that is appropriate for your health condition and unique individual constitution.
USES AND BENEFITS:
• Star anise oil contains the main chemical
compound anethole which is effective against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. This
oil can be used to help treat skin infections such as yeast infections (Candida
albicans) and as a natural ingredient in sanitizing products to fight
pathogenic bacteria.
• The anti-inflammatory properties of star
anise oil can reduce inflammation and joint pain (arthritis) or muscle tension
and help reduce minor skin irritations.
• In aromatherapy, this oil is used to
relieve respiratory problems such as coughs, bronchitis, or asthma and helps
loosen mucus and make breathing easier.
• The distinctive, sweet aroma of star
anise oil can have a calming effect that can reduce stress and anxiety and
improve sleep quality when used as a massage oil or in a diffuser.
• Star anise is a natural source of
shikimic acid, a compound used in the production of antiviral drugs such as
oseltamivir (Tamiflu). This oil has the potential to be a supporting ingredient
in the therapy of certain viral infections.
• Traditionally, star anise oil is used to treat bloating, indigestion, or colic. In addition, this oil can also help stimulate the secretion of digestive enzymes to increase metabolic efficiency.
• Its flavonoid and polyphenol content provides protection against cell damage caused by free radicals so it is good for preventing premature aging and supporting healthy skin and organs [9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16].
THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS:
Therapeutic benefits include antibacterial,
antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-aflatoxigenic, anti-mycotoxin,
antimicrobial, antiseptic, larvicidal, and neurological effects[9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16].

DESCRIPTION:
Star anise essential oil (SAO) is an
essential oil extracted from star anise fruit (Illicium verum Hook. f) with a
high anise flavor and is widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries
due to its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.
Our star anise essential oil is obtained
from the extraction of star anise fruit (Illicium Verum ) by the steam
distillation method. The resulting oil is a colorless to pale yellow liquid
with a distinctive sweet star anise aroma. This oil has antiseptic,
antibacterial, and antifungal properties. The sweet and spicy aroma of star
anise can help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. When used in massage, it
can help relieve muscle spasms due to its antispasmodic properties[1,2,3].
BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:
Illicium verum is a species of tree-shaped plant from the Schisandraceae family. This plant originates from a subtropical biome that is spread from China (southern and western Guangxi) to northern Vietnam. The scientific name Illicium verum was introduced by Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1888. Illicium verum is a medium-sized evergreen tree native to northeastern Vietnam and southwest China.
This plant is commonly known as “star
anise” and “Chinese anise”. Star anise has many synonyms in various regions. In
China, this plant is referred to as Chinese star anise and Bajiaohuixiang. The
observed scientific synonym for this plant is Illicium san-ki Perr. The
morphology of this species is a small tree, 6–8 m tall, gray-brown bark, green
branches, glabrous; cone-shaped to rounded crown. All parts of the tree have a
pleasant aromatic odor. The leaves are single, usually clustered at the end of
the branch. The leaves are entire, oval, tapering at both ends, the apex is
pointed, and the base is wedge-shaped. The leaf blade is thick and fragile,
dark green above, paler below, the petiole is glabrous. Pink-white flowers,
solitary and axillary, short and sturdy flower stalks. Six sepals, pink on the
edge, 16–20 petals, broadly elliptical, smaller than the sepals, white on the
outside, red on the inside, dark red in the center of the flower. Many stamens,
shorter than the petals, elliptical anthers. Eight carpels, forming a conical
mass, spreading into a rosette when ripe. The fruit consists of eight
follicles, spreading, woody and brown when ripe, bursting on the ventral side.
Solitary seeds in each follicle, brown, shiny, and glabrous. Star anise
originates from northern Vietnam and the forests of southern China, and is
cultivated in several regions, especially Jamaica and some tropical Asian
countries[4,5,6].
HISTORY:
In China, star anise has been used as a
spice since the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD) and as a medicine in the Ming
Dynasty (1368–1644 AD). Qi in TCM refers to the subtle substance in the human
body, one of the basic components that forms the human body and maintains life
activities. Yang (or Yang Qi) is a special and important concept in TCM. Star
anise can warm the body and produce a feeling of joy, allowing the Qi blood to
flow smoothly.
The Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2005 edition)
documents the main effects of star anise as a warmer and pain reliever. As a
well-known spice, star anise was first introduced to Europe in the seventeenth
century, and it derives its characteristic licorice flavor from the presence of
star anise essential oil (SAO). It is one of the first traditional Chinese
medicines to be announced by the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of
China in 2002 for dual use in medicine and food. In addition, it is also one of
the ten Traditional Chinese Medicines, Daodi Chinese herbal materials, and
regional specialty medicinal materials in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
announced by the Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Gvangjsih
Bouxcuengh Swcigih Cunghyihyoz Gvanjlijgiz) of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
in 2020. Star anise has been used in China for more than a thousand years, and
China is the only country in the world that can produce star anise on a large
scale. Star anise is mainly found in East and Southeast Asia and southern North
America. In East Asia, China is the main production area of star anise,
followed by Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Sumatra and Kalimantan in Indonesia,
and other regions and countries. In North America, star anise is mainly found
in Mexico, Haiti, and Florida. In China, star anise oil, also known as
"HuiYou" and "BaJiaoYou" has a wide range of chemical
diversity and uses. It is produced in China but is very popular in Malaysia,
Vietnam, Indonesia and other regions. Star anise has a variety of
pharmacological effects, including antioxidant, antibacterial,
anti-inflammatory, insecticidal, and antiviral properties.
The chemical composition of star anise is diverse, and the most important and widely studied components are SAO and shikimic acid. SAO is an essential oil extracted from star anise fruit. Star anise has a unique star anise flavor and is widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries due to its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.
So far, a total of 201 chemical components have been isolated from star anise, including hydrocarbons, alcohols and esters, as well as natural products such as star anise oil, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, phenol organic acids, terpenoids and others. These substances have been verified to have various biological activities, and various extraction methods including steam distillation have been established for their extraction[7,8].
