C.sinensis is a popular and commonly used ingredient in Traditional Chinese Medicine utilizing its peel, young fruit, ripe fruit, flowers, leaves, and other tissues. This plant is known for various activities such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antidiabetic, and antifungal. There are many variations of orange essential oil or oil derived from various parts of the orange tree. Our Sweet Orange Essential Oil is obtained from the extraction of sweet orange (C.sinensis) fruit peel using the cold pressed method. The resulting oil is a yellow to orange liquid with a distinctive, fresh and strong sweet orange aroma. Traditionally, this oil has been used in massage as an agent that effectively relieves stress, stomach ache, diarrhea, constipation, indigestion or improper digestion, and nasal congestion [1,2,3].

BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:

Indonesia has a variety of citrus varieties with high diversity in the Citrus genus. However, only three groups are considered native citrus: mandarin, orange, and citron. Other varieties are crosses from these three groups. The mandarin group itself consists of various species with significant phenotypic differences.

Citrus sinensis trees grow in tropical, semitropical, and warm regions, making them the most widely cultivated citrus trees in the world. Originally from Asia, it is now widespread in the Pacific region and warm climates.

In Indonesia, the spread of various types of citrus is rapid, marked by the emergence of many local commercial varieties, such as Garut tangerines (West Java), Tawangmangu (Central Java), Blinyu and Batu 55 (East Java), Pulung (Ponorogo), Siam Pontianak (West Kalimantan), Siam honey (North Sumatra), and Siam Banjar (South Kalimantan). For sweet oranges, there are varieties such as Pacitan sweet oranges and Punten sweet oranges (East Java). Sweet oranges (Citrus sinensis) are shrubs 3–10 meters high with short thorny branches. The leaves are oval to elongated, with stalks 0.5–3.5 cm long. The flowers are white or yellowish white. The fruit is round or slightly flat, yellow, orange, or yellowish green. The flesh is light yellow, orange, or reddish, with bubbles that merge[4,5,6].

HISTORY:

Orange Oil, most commonly referred to as Sweet Orange Essential Oil, comes from the botanical fruit of Citrus sinensis. In contrast, Bitter Orange Essential Oil comes from the botanical fruit of Citrus aurantium. The exact origin of Citrus sinensis is unknown, as it does not grow wild anywhere in the world; however, botanists believe that it is a natural hybrid of the Pummelo (C. maxima) and Mandarin (C. reticulata) plants and is native to Southwest China and the Himalayas.

For many years, the Sweet Orange tree was thought to be a form of the Bitter Orange tree (C. aurantium amara) and was thus referred to as C. aurantium var. sinensis. According to Historical sources, in 1493, Christopher Columbus brought orange seeds during his expedition to the Americas and eventually reached Haiti and the Caribbean. In the 16th century, Portuguese explorers introduced Orange trees to the West. In 1513, Ponce de Leon, a Spanish explorer, introduced Oranges to Florida. In 1450, Italian traders introduced Orange trees to the Mediterranean region. In 800 AD, Oranges were introduced to East Africa and the Middle East by Arab traders and then distributed through trade routes.

In the 15th century, Portuguese travelers introduced Sweet Oranges that they brought back from China to the forested areas of West Africa and into Europe. In the 16th century, Sweet Oranges were introduced to England. It is believed that Europeans valued Oranges primarily for their medicinal benefits, but they were quickly adopted as a fruit.

For thousands of years, Orange Oil’s ability to naturally boost immunity and reduce some of the symptoms of various diseases has made it a traditional medicine application for the treatment of acne, chronic stress, and other health problems.

In the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions, India, China use Orange Oil as a traditional remedy to relieve colds, coughs, chronic fatigue, depression, flu, digestive disorders, low libido, bad breath, poor circulation, skin infections, and cramps. In China, Oranges are believed to symbolize good luck and as such they continue to be an important feature of traditional medicine practices. Not only are the pulp and oil valuable, but the dried rind of the Bitter and Sweet Orange varieties have also been used in traditional Chinese medicine to relieve the aforementioned ailments as well as to treat anorexia.

Historically, Sweet Orange Essential Oil has had many household uses such as when it was used to add Orange flavor to soft drinks, candies, desserts, chocolates, and other sweetmeats. Industrially, Orange Oil’s antiseptic and preservative properties make it ideal for use in the production of cosmetics and skin care products such as soaps, creams, lotions, and deodorants. For its natural antiseptic properties, Orange Oil is also used in cleaning products such as air freshener sprays.

In the early 1900s, it was used to scent several products such as detergents, perfumes, soaps, and other toiletries. Over time, Sweet Orange Oil and other citrus oils began to be replaced with synthetic citrus fragrances. Today, it continues to be used in similar applications and has gained popularity as a sought-after ingredient in cosmetic and health products due to its astringent, cleansing, and brightening properties, among many others[7,8].
