oil is a transparent to pale yellow liquid with a distinctive fresh and
slightly citrus aroma of kenikir. Traditionally, C. caudatus has been used to
improve blood circulation, strengthen bones, reduce body heat, as an anti-aging
agent, and to treat infectious diseases[1,2,3].
BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:
Cosmos spp. comes from tropical and
subtropical regions including southern Mexico, Central America, or the
Antilles. C. caudatus (Kunth), is one of the Cosmos species brought by the
Spanish to Southeast Asia via the Philippines from Mexico. The Malays call
kenikir ulam raja, which roughly means King of Salad. Morphologically, kenikir
is a shrub with a height of 75-100 cm and a distinctive odor. The kenikir tree
has an upright, rectangular, longitudinally grooved, branched, purplish green
segmented stem. The leaves are compound, opposite each other, pinnately
divided, pointed at the tip, flat at the edge, 15-25 cm long, green in color.
Compound flowers, in the form of a tuber, at the tip of the stem, stalks ± 25
cm long, the crown consists of 8 petals, 7 ± 1 cm long, red, tubular stamens,
blackish brown anthers, hairy pistils, yellowish green, red. The fruit is hard,
needle-shaped, hairy tip, green when young, brown when old. Hard, small,
needle-shaped seeds, ± 1 cm long, black. Taproot and white[4,5,6].
HISTORY:
Kenikir, or Cosmos caudatus, is a
traditional herbal plant that has its roots in Mesoamerican cultures and was
later widely used in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia. Historically, the
plant was introduced to the region during colonial trade routes and has become
a common vegetable and medicinal plant. Known as “ulam raja” in Malaysia,
kenikir is popular in traditional dishes, often consumed as a raw salad or
incorporated into herbal remedies.
The plant is renowned for its functional properties, which are largely due to its rich bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, phenolics, and antioxidants. These compounds contribute to its traditional uses, which include improving digestion, reducing inflammation, and managing diabetes. Modern studies highlight its potential in increasing antioxidant levels and reducing blood sugar due to its high flavonoid and phenolic content[7,8].
