DESCRIPTION:
Artemisia dracunculus L. (tarragon),
Asteraceae, is a species that has long been used in traditional Asian medicine,
especially in Iran, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, and India. This plant is known as a
spice species in Asia, Europe and America. Our Tarragon essential oil is
obtained from the extraction of flowers and leaves (Artemisia Dracunculus L.)
by steam distillation method, the resulting oil is a colorless to pale yellow
liquid and has an aroma like anise, licorice spice, wood, basil. Tarragon oil
has been known to have many biological activities such as anti-fungal,
antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory. Tarragon has traditionally been used to
regulate menstruation and assist childbirth [1,2,3].
BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:
The name Artemisia dracunculus comes from
the Latin word "dracunculus" which means "little dragon",
and refers to the shape of the leaves which resemble a dragon's tongue.
Artemisia dracunculus L., known as tarragon, is a perennial herbaceous plant
from the Asteraceae family. This plant originates from Eastern Europe, Central
and East Asia, and western North America. Tarragon has long, narrow leaves with
plant growth that can reach a height of up to 150 cm. The stems are straight,
ribbed and do not flower at the bottom. The leaves are arranged alternately.
There are two main cultivated varieties of tarragon: French tarragon and
Russian tarragon. French tarragon has smoother, darker, and glossier leaves
than Russian tarragon, and has a sharper aroma. The difference in taste between
the two varieties is also significant; French tarragon has a sweet,
licorice-like flavor, while Russian tarragon is more bitter and spicy[4,5,6].
HISTORY:
Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L.) is a
perennial herb that has been used since ancient times, both in cooking and
traditional medicine. It is native to Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and
Siberia, and has spread to many parts of the world, including Europe and North
America. The name "tarragon" comes from the French word
"estragon," which is derived from the Latin dracunculus, meaning
"little snake," referring to the curved, snake-like shape of the
leaves.
In the Middle Ages, tarragon was considered a medicinal plant used to improve appetite and relieve indigestion. In Europe, tarragon has become an important seasoning in cooking, especially in France, where it is used in a variety of sauces, salads, and fish dishes. In addition, tarragon is also used in traditional European medicine to relieve digestive problems and as a mild anti-inflammatory agent.
Tarragon oil, extracted from the leaves and other parts of the plant using steam distillation, has been used in traditional medicine to treat digestive disorders, insomnia, and stress. This essential oil is known to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which make it useful in relieving minor infections and inflammation. In culinary practice, tarragon oil is used to add a distinctive flavor and aroma to sauces and meat-based dishes, especially in French cuisine. In addition, tarragon oil is also used in the cosmetic and skincare industries due to its antiseptic properties. In aromatherapy, this oil is often used to improve sleep quality, relieve anxiety, and improve mood[7,8,9].
