HISTORY:

From the Middle Ages to modern times, Thyme has been embraced as a powerful spiritual, medicinal and culinary herb. The burning of this highly fragrant plant has long symbolized the cleansing and purification of all that is negative and undesirable, be it pests, pathogens, uncertainty, fear or nightmares.

It was Pliny the Elder, a renowned Roman philosopher and writer, who aptly summed up this sentiment: “Thyme blows away all poisonous creatures”. Thus, the word ‘Thyme’ is believed to have originated from the Greek words ‘thymon’ (meaning ‘to fumigate’ or purify) or ‘thumus’ (meaning ‘courage’).

Since ancient times, thyme has been used in various cultures for culinary, medicinal and religious purposes. The ancient Egyptians used it in the embalming process, while the Greeks used it as incense in temples and added it to baths for its invigorating scent.

In medieval European tradition, thyme was placed under pillows to ward off nightmares and given to knights as a symbol of courage before battle.

Thyme essential oil, extracted from the flowers and leaves of this plant, has long been used in traditional medicine.

The main constituent of this oil is thymol, which has antiseptic, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. In traditional medical practice, thyme oil is used as an expectorant to relieve coughs and respiratory infections. In addition, this oil is also applied topically to treat wounds and skin infections due to its ability to fight bacteria and fungi. The use of thyme oil in various therapeutic applications has been documented in the scientific literature, highlighting its potential as an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent.

Recent studies have shown that this oil has antibiofilm, antifungal, antileishmanial, antiviral and anticancer activities. In addition, new therapeutic formulations, such as nanocapsules containing thyme oil are being developed to increase its effectiveness and application in medical practice[7,8,9].
