Fenugreek is an annual plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. Fenugreek is used as a decoction from the leaves of the plant, and as a spice from the seeds.  The seeds are small, yellowish brown in color and have a slightly bitter taste and strong aroma [2]. Our fenugreek oil is extracted from the seeds of the fenugreek tree, has a distinctive sweet-spicy aroma, and is very strong spicy. Fenugreek oil tends to be dark yellow to brownish yellow, transparent, and somewhat thick. Fenugreek oil is biologically rich in antioxidants and contains antimicrobial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that help treat certain skin conditions such as acne, lighten scars and protect the skin from free radicals.

BOTANICAL:

Fenugreek is spread throughout the world, this plant has different names or names such as Arabic: Hulba; Indonesia : Kelabet; Malaysia : Halba/Kelabet; etc. Trigonella foenum-graecum L., fabaceae family or known as fenugreek or Klabet in Indonesia, is an aromatic plant with a height of 30 to 60 cm, has three parts of leaves, slender and long stems, grayish green leaves with a length of about 5 cm and about 2.5 cm wide, the roots have a finger-like structure, the flowers are single or a pair, the crown is white or pale yellow and blooms from June to July, the pods are glabrous, elongated or lanceolate, each pod contains 10 to 20 seeds. Cabbage seeds are small (about 5 mm long), hard, and brownish yellow in color and can vary [4].  Fenugreek is currently cultivated in many countries from Asia, Europe and Africa. India has a fenugreek seed production of 1675 kg/ha, while Egypt and the UK produce around 1400 kg/ha and 3700 kg/ha respectively. The valuable resource of fenugreek can be further exploited commercially for the benefit of the farming community and the country's economy.

HISTORY :

The use of Fenugreek dates back six thousand years.  Through discoveries, archaeologists believe that this spice has been used since 4000 BC, when remains of this herb were discovered in Tell Halal, Iraq[1]. Fenugreek plants originate from the Eastern Mediterranean and Southeast Asia regions, the largest producers of Trigonella foenum-graecum are India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Mediterranean and Argentina. Historically, Fenugreek was grown as animal feed according to Cato the Elder, as stated in his book De Agri Cultura (On Agriculture), published in 160 BC[2].

Although Fenugreek has a distinctive aroma, many of its aromatic components are almost undetectable by normal analytical methods, but nevertheless contribute to its unusual aroma[2]. Fenugreek was traditionally used in ancient Egypt as an incense and to embalm mummies. In ancient Rome, fenugreek was said to be used to aid labor and delivery. In Chinese medicine, fenugreek seeds are used as a tonic, treatment of weakness and edema in the legs. In India, it is generally consumed as a spice and used medicinally as a lactation stimulant[3]. The Greek doctor Hippocrates used it as a soothing herb.  Other ancient Greeks used Fenugreek as a remedy for infections.  The ancient Romans used it to treat fevers and respiratory and intestinal problems. They also use it to help heal wounds[1].

Fenugreek seeds contain large amounts of oleic acid, nicotinic acid, linolenic acid, linoleic acid, fiber, glycolipids, phospholipids, choline, and vitamins A, B1, B2, C, and niacin. Empirical studies show that fenugreek has many potential therapeutic applications such as antidiabetic, antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-anorexic, and anticarcinogenic agent. Fenugreek also shows potential for development as a sustainable source of income for farmers, traders and related industrial interests.
