BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:

Tuberose or Polianthes tuberosa L., a perennial fragrant herbaceous plant, representative of the genus Polianthes L., belongs to the asparagus family (Asparagaceae Juss.), agave subfamily (Agavoideae Herb.). The genus tuberose combines up to 15 species and several varieties and cultural forms. Tuberose is a tuberous plant and the most prominent taxon in the genus is Polianthes tuberosa L., which is native to Mexico, being an endemic specimen of the country and of great economic importance. Tuberose is cultivated in many countries, used in perfumery, ornamentation and its flowers are known for their valuable essential oil content.

This plant has a pseudo stem formed from a pile of leaf sheaths and can produce several mother bulbs. The leaves are ribbon-shaped, long, and slender with pointed tips, dark green in color. Tuberose flowers are arranged in compound clusters at the end of the stem, with funnel-shaped white flowers that bloom at night and emit a distinctive fragrant aroma. This plant grows well in tropical areas with full sunlight and good soil drainage.

Research on the morphological and physiological responses of tuberose flowers to retardant exposure shows that retardant administration affects the number of flower buds and leaf pigments, which can be utilized for the development of this plant cultivation as a potted flower [4,5,6,7].

HISTORY:

Tuberose originally came from southern Mexico and Central America. It reached India via the Philippines. Two other routes were reported to Europe. One was via Spain to France, the other via Persia to Provence.

Tuberose, before being known as Tuberosa Polianthes, was first known as the "hyacinth of India" meaning "city flower". The term "Polianthes" comes from the Greek words "polis" meaning "city" and "anthos" meaning "flower". The genus name refers to the fleshy tuberous roots of the plant. Tuberose is a member of the agave family of about 13 species. Each species of this plant is more or less fragrant.

In recent times, tuberose has been widely cultivated in Comoros, Morocco, China and India for medicinal purposes. It is said that a French missionary brought the first tuberose tubers in 1530 from Mexico and secretly planted them in a garden near Toulon.

Tuberose was significantly developed in Italian Liguria, Languedoc and Provence, throughout the second half of the 17th century, especially for merchants, pharmacists and glove makers. Its characteristic sweet and alluring aroma made it an important component in the perfumery industry. In addition, this oil was used in aromatherapy to treat anxiety and depression.

During the Italian Renaissance, unmarried girls were forbidden to walk in tuberose gardens because of their magical and erotic powers, so that they would not be immersed in the intoxicating scent of the flowers and men would be driven crazy by the bewitching smell. Where jasmine absolute expressed joy on the face, it was said that women who exuded the scent of tuberose could induce mimicry recalling orgasm.

Tuberose absolute has been used in fine perfumery in the past. Old perfumes containing varying amounts of tuberose were mostly made in the early 20th century[8,9,10].
