In addition, turmeric is also used to preserve food as an antimicrobial. Our turmeric oil is obtained from the extraction of turmeric rhizomes (Curcuma Longa) using the steam distillation method. The resulting oil is a bright yellow liquid with a distinctive and herbal aroma. Turmeric oil is known to have various bioactivities such as antioxidants, antibacterials, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and others [1,2,3].

BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:

Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is a herbal plant from the Zingiberaceae family that is widely used as a spice and traditional medicine. Botanically, turmeric comes from tropical South Asia, especially India, which is considered the center of origin and domestication of this plant. The distribution of turmeric from India has entered various other tropical regions, including Southeast Asia, through trade routes and cultural migration.

Taxonomically, turmeric is included in the Liliopsida class and the Zingiberales order. This plant has an upright, round, yellowish-green pseudo-stem. The leaves are single, lanceolate, about 30–60 cm long. The dorsal part of the middle leaf bone is often purple, which fades as the leaves mature. Turmeric rhizome is the main part that is utilized, with characteristic yellow to orange color and distinctive aroma. This plant also produces compound flowers with yellowish-white petals and yellow flower crowns. Turmeric grows optimally in tropical areas with an altitude of up to 1,000 meters above sea level. This plant requires sufficient light intensity, warm temperatures, and high humidity. Turmeric rhizome contains active compounds such as curcumin and essential oils that act as antioxidants, antibacterials, and have various other health benefits. Ethnobotanical studies also show the use of turmeric in traditional medicine in various regions. In addition, research related to the morphological characteristics and yield of turmeric rhizomes has been conducted to understand the variation in growth in different environments [4,5,6,7].

HISTORY:

Turmeric oil comes from the rhizome (underground stem) of the Curcuma longa plant, commonly known as turmeric. Turmeric is a perennial herb in the ginger family or Zingiberaceae. Native to southern India and India, this flowering plant is widely cultivated on the mainland and islands of the Indian Ocean.

The therapeutic powers of turmeric have been discovered for thousands of years. Turmeric is used in Ayurvedic medicine, an ancient holistic healing system developed over 3,000 years ago in India. Indians prized turmeric for its ability to strengthen the body’s overall energy, relieve gas, eliminate worms, improve digestion, support the upper respiratory tract, regulate menstruation, and treat skin disorders. Turmeric is believed to have spread to various regions of the world: reaching China in 700 AD, East Africa in 800 AD, West Africa in 1200 AD, and Jamaica in the 18th century.

Essential oil extracted from turmeric rhizomes (Curcuma longa L.) has been traditionally used in various cultures, especially in South and Southeast Asia, as an important component in traditional medicine, culinary, and religious rituals. In traditional medicine, turmeric oil is utilized for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound healing properties. In addition, the oil is used as a natural colorant and flavor enhancer in cooking, as well as in religious ceremonies and cultural rituals.

Scientific research has identified that turmeric essential oil contains compounds such as curcumin and essential oils that act as antioxidants, antitumor, anticancer, antimicrobial, and antitoxins.

These compounds provide the scientific basis for the various traditional applications of turmeric oil in health and medicine. In addition, turmeric essential oil has been studied for various pharmacological applications. For example, a study showed that turmeric rhizome essential oil has the potential to inhibit the activity of the AChE enzyme in a mouse model of dementia, suggesting possible benefits in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases[8,9,10].
