This information is for topical use only and is not intended to replace prescription medication or professional medical advice or to diagnose any health condition.

Never swallow essential oils and remember to dilute them with a suitable carrier oil such as olive or coconut oil. This is due to the fact that organic and pure essential oils are highly concentrated liquids and direct application of essential oils to the skin may cause allergic reactions. Caution should be taken if you are a nursing or pregnant mother. Keep out of reach of children.

Speak to your healthcare practitioner before selecting an essential oil that is appropriate for your health condition and unique individual constitution.

• In the Health industry, turpentine oil is used topically as one of the balsam ingredients that can help relieve breathing.

• In the chemical industry, turpentine is used as a raw material for the synthesis of organic compounds such as paint and carbolic acid.

Modern phytotherapy describes the properties of turpentine oil which include antiparasitic, analgesic, revulsive, disinfectant (external use); balsamic, active in bronchial secretions and lung and urinary tract infections, hemostatic, dissolves gallstones, diuretic, antispasmodic, antirheumatic, anthelmintic, as an antidote to poisoning caused by phosphorus and increases ciliary and secretory activity[16].

DESCRIPTION:

The term 'turpentine oil' is derived from the Latin word terebinthine, the name of the terebinth tree, and is traditionally used as an antiseptic agent in the manufacture of ointments and Zomads in traditional Iranian medicine. Our Turpentine Oil is obtained from the extraction of the gum of the Pinus Merkusii tree by steam distillation. The resulting oil is clear in color with a distinctive fresh and kerosene-like aroma. Turpentine consists of terpene hydrocarbons (including α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, 3-carene, and camphene), along with other oxygenated terpenes such as anethole. The bioactivity of this oil is commonly used in various herbal medicines such as relieving muscle and respiratory pain[1,2,3].

BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:

Pinus merkusii, or known as tusam, is a species of pine that grows naturally in Indonesia, especially in North Sumatra, and several other Southeast Asian regions. This tree was first found in the Sipirok area, South Tapanuli. Its distribution includes the eastern part of Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines. Pinus merkusii is a medium to large tree, reaching 25–45 meters in height and a trunk diameter of up to 1 m. The bark is orange-red, thick and deeply fissured at the base of the trunk, and thin and scaly at the upper crown. The leaves ('needles') are paired, very slender, 15–20 centimeters long and less than 1 millimeter thick, green to yellowish green.

Pinus merkusii is a monoecious plant, with male and female strobilus on the same tree but in separate locations. The male strobilus is cylindrical with a length of about 2 cm, while the female strobilus is cone-shaped with a pointed tip and scaly. The fruit is cone-shaped or cylindrical, 5-10 cm long, brown in color, and is a false fruit because it cannot be eaten. The seeds are flat, round to oval, with wings that facilitate wind dispersal [4,5,6].

HISTORY:

The Ancient Egyptians (around 1000 BC) used turpentine oil as part of a resin mixture for the mummification process and in herbal medicine. The Ancient Greeks and Romans used turpentine in ointments and medicines to treat wounds, infections, and respiratory problems. Historically, this oil has been used in a variety of fields, including as a solvent for oil paints, a raw material in the production of varnish, and in the chemical industry for the synthesis of organic compounds.

Turpentine is also added to many cleaning and sanitary products because of its antiseptic properties and "clean aroma". In America, in the early 19th century, turpentine was sometimes burned in lamps as a cheap alternative to whale oil. It was most often used for outdoor lighting, due to its strong odor. A mixture of ethanol and turpentine called camphine served as the dominant lamp fuel replacing whale oil until the advent of kerosene.

In 1946, Soichiro Honda fueled the first Honda motorcycle with a mixture of gasoline and turpentine, due to gasoline shortages in Japan after World War II. In his book If Only They Could Talk, veterinarian and author James Herriot describes the use of turpentine reacting with re-sublimated iodine to “drive the iodine into the tissues,” or perhaps simply to impress the watching customers with a spectacular treatment (dense clouds of purple smoke)[8,9,10,11].
