DESCRIPTION:
Vanilla has a unique fragrance that is one
of the universal attractions especially its influence on emotions. Our vanilla
oil is obtained from vanilla (beans) extracted with organic solvent n-Hexane.
The resulting oil is a pale yellow to dark yellow liquid with a strong and
sweet vanilla aroma. The aroma is classified as a soft base note with a sensual
and warm floral aroma. The health benefits of vanilla oil can be attributed to
its properties as a high antioxidant so that it can help speed up healing from
things like sun damage and pollution on the skin [1,2,3,4,5].
BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:
Vanilla is native to southeastern Mexico,
Guatemala, and other parts of Central America and the Antilles. In Central
America, the fruits were used by the Aztecs to flavor cocoa. The fruit was
known to Europe in the 16th century but it was not until the second half of the
19th century that large-scale cultivation began outside its natural
distribution area. Today vanilla is cultivated pantropically but important
production areas are Indonesia, Madagascar, the Comoros, Tonga, Réunion, Mexico
and French Oceania. In Indonesia, vanilla is mainly cultivated in Java and
Bali.
Vanilla planifolia is an evergreen climbing
plant belonging to the Orchidaceae family. It can grow to a height of 15 meters
or more, with thick stems and glossy green, lanceolate to oval leaves that are
8–25 cm long and 2–8 cm wide. Each leaf has thick, fleshy aerial roots that
grow from the nodes, helping the plant to attach to supports such as trees or
other structures. Vanilla planifolia flowers are yellowish green with a
diameter of about 5 cm and bloom for only one day. The flowers usually appear in
axillary clusters with 12–20 buds. The fruit is a long pod measuring 15–23 cm
which is often referred to as a "vanilla bean". The fruit contains
small black seeds and takes about 8–9 months to mature[6,7,8].
HISTORY:
Vanilla (Vanilla planifolia) is a climbing
plant in the orchid family native to Mexico and Central America. The Totonac
people of Veracruz, Mexico, are believed to have been the first to cultivate
and use vanilla. After the Aztec conquest, vanilla was used as an ingredient in
a chocolate drink called "xocoatl". Spanish explorers, such as Hernán
Cortés, later introduced vanilla to Europe in the 16th century.
Initially, efforts to cultivate vanilla
outside of Mexico were difficult because natural pollination only occurred with
the help of Melipona bees, which are endemic to the region. In 1841, Edmond
Albius, a slave on Réunion Island, discovered an effective method of artificial
pollination, allowing vanilla to be cultivated in various tropical regions,
including Madagascar and Indonesia.
Vanilla oil is extracted from vanilla pods through processes such as solvent extraction or supercritical CO₂ extraction. This oil contains the main compound vanillin, which gives the plant its sweet, distinctive aroma. In traditional medicine, vanilla is used to treat digestive disorders, increase stamina, and as an aphrodisiac. In addition, vanilla oil has antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, making it useful in a variety of health and beauty applications.
In the perfume industry, vanilla oil is used as a "base note" due to its warm and sweet aroma. In the food and beverage industry, vanilla is one of the most popular flavors, used in products such as ice cream, cakes, and sweet drinks. In addition, vanilla oil is also used in aromatherapy for its calming and stress-reducing effects[9,10,11,12].
