This is due to the fact that organic and pure essential oils are highly concentrated liquids and direct application of essential oils to the skin can cause allergic reactions. Caution should be taken if you are a nursing or pregnant mother. Keep out of reach of children.
Talk to your healthcare practitioner before selecting an essential oil that is appropriate for your health condition and unique individual constitution.

DESCRIPTION:
Vetiver essential oil has been
used for centuries in North India, then spread to Southeast Asia, China, the
Middle East, West Africa, and Europe. In general, vetiver oil is used for
religious and medical purposes. Our Dark Vetiver Oil is obtained from the
extraction of fragrant roots (Vetiveria zizanioides) by steam distillation
method. The resulting oil is greenish brown to reddish brown in color with a
sweet, earthy, woody aroma and a strong, smoky vetiver root aroma.
Vetiver oil has a promising
role in the health or medical field, the application of this oil is widely
found in various downstream products such as ointments, balms, creams,
shampoos, soaps, and aromatherapy. Indonesia has great potential because it is
ranked the third largest producer in the world but needs to be improved in high
quality, especially to treat smoky burning odors and pesticide contamination.
The use of vetiver oil continues to be developed topically and orally
[1,2,3,4,5].
BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:
Vegetable root or narwastu
(vetiver grass, Chrysopogon zizanioides syn. Vetiveria zizanioides, Andropogon
zizanioides) is a type of grass originating from North India. Vetiver plants
are perennial grass plants that form large, dense clumps with a perpendicular
growth direction, compact, aromatic, branched, have rhizomes and deep fibrous
root systems.
Vetiver clumps grow to a height
of 1-1.5m, with a diameter of 2-8mm. The leaves are line-shaped, flat, stiff
and the lower surface of the leaves is smooth. Terminal panicle inflorescences
(compound bunches), each bunch is up to 10cm long, the segments formed between
the bunch and the flower stalk are thread-shaped, but at the apex they appear
thickened. Vetiver has a strong and extensive root system, thick and deep with
a tensile strength equal to 1/6 of mild steel giving this plant a better
advantage for adaptation to various stresses, such as drought, low temperature,
heavy metals, acidity and alkalinity, and salinity. The chemical compounds of
V.zizanioides roots are very complex, containing about 100 types of
sesquiterpene compounds and their derivatives. The main composition of chemical
compounds from V.zizanioides roots include sesquiterpene hydrocarbons such as
cadenene, clovene, amorphine, aromadendrine, junipene; alcohol vetiverols
derivative compounds such as khusimol, epiglobulol, spathulenol, khusinol;
carbonyl vetiveron derivative compounds (ketones) such as α-vetivon, β-vetivon,
khusimon; and ester derivative compounds such as khusinolacetate. Three
carbonyl compounds, α-vetiver, β-vetiver and khusimon, are the main components
that influence the aroma of vetiver oil[6,7,8,9].
HISTORY:
Vetiver originates from
northern India. This plant is very distinctive and is known in Sanskrit by
various names, namely Virana, Lamajjaka, Lamaja, Bala, or Turushka-danda
(turushka = fragrant compound, danda = stem). Vetiver plants are known as
Saewaendara or Vettyveer in Sri Lanka.
Vetiver plants spread from Sri
Lanka to Europe and were then called Vetiver until now. Vetiver plants have
been cultivated in tropical and subtropical countries, such as Southeast Asia
(Indonesia, Malaysia, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Philippines), China (southern
region), Middle East (Iran), Africa (Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Senegal, Sierra
Leone, Reunion, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe), South America (Puerto Rico,
Haiti, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico). Vetiver is called akar wangi,
laraseta, or usar in Indonesia. The botanical name of Vetiver is Vetiveria
zizanioides (L.) Nash, Andropogon muricatus (Retz), Andropogon zizanioides (L.)
Urban, Chrysopogon zizanioides (L.) Roberty, or Phalaris zizanioides L. The
roots and leaves (stems) of the Vetiver plant have several benefits.
Since ancient times, almost all
parts of the Vetiver plant have been used for various applications including
making perfumes, soaps, and cosmetics. In addition, it is also used in food and
beverages, Vetiver is made into cold drinks and sorbet flavorings. In tropical
countries, Vetiver roots are traditionally used in the production of homemade
evaporative coolers, which functioned as air conditioners before the discovery
of electricity. Because of its coolness, the roots are ideal for use in making
grass mats. The process involves weaving the dried roots together with coconut
fiber rope to make curtains, which are soaked in water before being hung on
windows and doors. As hot air passes over the cool, moist roots, Vetiver
curtains not only provide cool air but also emit a calming, earthy scent that
is alluring to the interior of the home and acts as an insect repellent.
Similarly, Vetiver grass mats are spread over cars to keep them cool.
In India and Africa, Vetiver
grass is woven into awnings, roofs, rugs, baskets, curtains, animal feed and
bedding, and other household necessities. To keep the temperature cool for
drinking water and to benefit from Vetiver’s health-promoting properties, the
roots are placed in gauze bags and stored in clay water pots.
Since the Middle Ages, Vetiver
Oil has been most commonly used in perfumery. Its deep, woody scent has been
associated with men’s perfumes, and it has been a key ingredient in most men’s
fragrances. Since the 12th century, the Vetiver herb and the essential oil
derived from its roots have been used worldwide for their calming, protective,
and uplifting properties:
In Ayurvedic practice, Vetiver
Oil is revered for its spiritually inspiring aroma and for its healing
qualities. Hence, it is used to treat a variety of health problems including
psychosomatic temperament imbalances, arthritis and other joint disorders, muscle
pain, headaches, fever, loss of energy, heatstroke, and skin problems.
During periods of high ambient temperatures, the refreshing properties of Vetiver Essential Oil make it ideal for cooling high body temperatures. Vetiver Oil is an integral part of Ayurvedic massage due to its added ability to strengthen the nervous system by calming the senses and thereby reducing stress and physical fatigue associated with low immunity. Before a wedding, the bride and groom are given a purifying massage with Vetiver Oil.
Inspired by ancient Chinese beliefs, Vetiver Essential Oil is used in traditional medicine to soothe and refresh dry skin, balance emotions, relieve negative feelings, stimulate focus and energize the body, and calm and soothe the body. When patients suffer from “Yin” deficiency which often results in mind-related problems such as dissociative depressive states, they are prescribed Vetiver Oil for use in meditation. [10,11,12].
