DESCRIPTION

The gandapura plant is a plant originating from North America, Europe, and Nepal whose leaves contain essential oils. Gandapura essential oil is generally produced by steam distillation or hydrodistillation. During the distillation process, the gaultherin glycoside compound in the gandapura plant is converted into methyl salicylate. Methyl salicylate is the main compound contained in gandapura essential oil and is used in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and aromatherapy industries. Our Wintergreen oil is obtained from the extraction of dried leaves by steam distillation. The resulting oil is a colorless or clear liquid with a distinctive aroma of gandapura and methyl salicylate. Gandapura essential oil is widely used to treat health problems related to muscles and joints [1,2,3,4,5].

BOTANICAL OVERVIEW

The Gandapura plant, Gaultheria procumbens, is native to North America, especially from Newfoundland to Manitoba in Canada, and south to Alabama in the United States. This plant grows in acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soil, often found in pine forests or areas with medium to high altitudes. Gandapura is a slow-growing plant, found in forests that have a pleasant aroma and taste. This plant is a small, low-growing shrub, usually reaching 10-15 cm. The leaves are evergreen, elliptical or oval in shape, 2–5 cm long and 1–2 cm wide, with a distinctive gandapura oil aroma. The flowers are bell-shaped, 5 mm long, white, growing solitary or short. The berry-like fruit is actually a dry capsule surrounded by a fleshy calyx. The leaves and stems of Gaultheria procumbens contain methyl salicylate, a compound used as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory. Its essential oil is often used in health products to relieve muscle and joint pain, as well as in the perfume and aromatherapy industry due to its distinctive fresh aroma[6,7,8].

HISTORY

In 1843, French chemist Auguste André Thomas Cahours first isolated methyl salicylate from the Gaultheria procumbens plant, identifying it as an ester of salicylic acid and methanol. Over time, methyl salicylate began to be produced synthetically, which became known as synthetic wintergreen oil. In the early 19th century, commercial production of wintergreen oil began in the United States and Canada, using a simple distillation method. However, after the development of a process for the synthesis of salicylic acid from phenol in Germany in 1874, production of synthetic methyl salicylate increased. In the 1920s, companies such as Dow Chemical and Monsanto produced synthetic methyl salicylate marketed as "Synthetic Wintergreen Oil." Wintergreen oil is extracted from the leaves of the Gaultheria procumbens plant by steam distillation after fermentation. Traditionally, the oil is used to relieve muscle and joint pain, headaches, and other inflammatory conditions. Native North Americans used wintergreen leaves to make a tea that acted as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory. Today, wintergreen oil is used in a variety of products, including as a flavoring in candy, toothpaste, and beverages, and as a component in topical medications to relieve muscle and joint pain. It is also used in aromatherapy and as a fragrance ingredient in cosmetic products[9,10,11].
