cosmetic industry, fragrances, and as a mixture in food ingredients. Both are
different, researchers state that cananga oil has a less sharp odor than
ylang-ylang oil.
Our Grade A ylang ylang oil is obtained
from the extraction of Cananga Odorata var. flowers. Genuina with steam
distillation method, the oil produced is almost colorless to dark yellow, with
a strong floral, woody, and balsam aroma, this oil has a higher aroma quality
compared to other ylang ylang oils. This oil has been widely studied and has
various biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and
antioxidant [1,2,3].
BOTANICAL OVERVIEW:
Cananga odorata Hook. F. & Thomson
forma genuina, commonly called ylang-ylang, is a fast-growing tree that can be
found naturally in tropical Asia such as the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia,
Papua New Guinea, and several other islands in the Indian Ocean, especially in
Comoro, Nossi Be, and Madagascar.
This plant grows in tropical rainforests
with high rainfall, at altitudes up to 800 meters above sea level. Likes
well-drained acidic soil, such as that found in its natural rainforest habitat.
This plant is famous for its fragrant flowers and has been introduced to China,
India, Africa, and America. Ylang ylang belongs to the Annonaceae family, which
is a medium to large tree, reaching a height of 10–20 meters. It has glossy
green compound leaves, 13–21 cm long, with wavy edges. The flowers hang on long
stalks, with six narrow greenish-yellow, rarely pink, petals. The fruit is
round to oval, green when young and turns purplish black when ripe[4,5,6,7].
HISTORY:
Ylang Ylang Essential Oil, pronounced
“Ee-lang Ee-lang,” is generally derived from the Tagalog word “ilang,” meaning
“wilderness,” where the tree is found naturally. The wildernesses where it
originates or is cultivated include the tropical rainforests of the
Philippines, Indonesia, Java, Sumatra, Comoro, and Polynesia. The Ylang Ylang
tree, scientifically identified as the botanical name Cananga odorata, is also
sometimes referred to as the Fragrant Cananga, Perfume Tree, and Makasar Oil
Plant.
Ylang Ylang Essential Oil is derived from
the steam distillation of the starfish-shaped flower part of the plant. It is
known to have an aroma that can be described as sweet and soft floral and fresh
with fruity undertones. There are 5 varieties of Ylang Ylang Essential Oil
available on the market: In the first 1-2 hours of distillation, the distillate
obtained is called Extra, while Ylang Ylang Essential Oil grades I, II, and III
are extracted in the following hours at specifically designated time portions.
The fifth variety is called Complete Ylang Ylang. This final distillation of
Ylang Ylang is usually achieved after distilling for 6-20 hours. It retains the
rich, sweet, and distinctive floral aroma; however, it has a more herbaceous
tone than the previous distillation, so the aroma is generally lighter than
Ylang Ylang Extra. The name ‘Full’ refers to the fact that this variety is the
result of continuous, uninterrupted distillation of Ylang Ylang flowers.
In Indonesia, Ylang Ylang flowers, believed
to have aphrodisiac properties, are sprinkled on the bed of newlywed couples.
In the Philippines, Ylang Ylang Essential Oil is used by healers to treat
wounds, burns, and insect and snake bites. In the Maluku Islands, the oil is
used to make a popular hair pomade called Macassar Oil. In the early 20th
century, after its medicinal properties were discovered by a French chemist,
Ylang Ylang Oil began to be used as a powerful remedy for intestinal infections
and for typhus and malaria. Eventually, it became popular throughout the world
for its ability to promote relaxation by reducing the symptoms and harmful
effects of anxiety and stress.
Today, Ylang Ylang Oil continues to be used
for its health-promoting properties. Due to its calming and stimulating
properties, it is known to be beneficial for treating ailments related to
women’s reproductive health, such as premenstrual syndrome and low libido. In
addition, it is beneficial for calming stress-related ailments such as anxiety,
depression, nervous tension, insomnia, high blood pressure, and heart
palpitations[8].
