myrcene, which provide antimicrobial, antioxidant, and relaxing effects. In
aromatherapy, yuzu oil is often used to relieve stress, improve mood, and
create a refreshing atmosphere [1,2,3].
BOTANICAL
OVERVIEW:
Yuzu (Citrus × junos)
is a citrus fruit plant originating from China and belonging to the Rutaceae
family. This plant has been cultivated mainly in East Asia, and has recently
also been planted in New Zealand, Australia, Spain, Italy, and France.
Morphologically, yuzu
grows as an upright shrub or small tree with many large thorns. The leaves have
large leaf stalks that resemble leaves, similar to kaffir lime and Ichang
papeda, and have a strong aroma. Yuzu fruit is round with a diameter of between
5.5 and 7.5 cm, and can be yellow or green depending on the level of ripeness.
The rind is rough and uneven, with a highly aromatic and tart flesh[4,5,6,7,8].
HISTORY:
Citrus junos is a
cold-hardy evergreen tree that grows wild in its native Tibet and Central
China. It has been widely cultivated in Japan and Korea. In a Japanese
tradition dating back to the early 18th century, yuzu citrus is used in a
traditional ceremonial bath called yuzuyu, in which whole fruit, usually
wrapped in gauze, is floated in hot water during the winter solstice to promote
blood circulation and relaxation. In traditional medicine, yuzu is used to
improve skin health and as a source of natural antioxidants. Today, yuzu oil is
used in aromatherapy for its calming and refreshing effects, and in skin care
products to brighten and firm the skin. Its distinctive fresh, citrusy aroma
makes yuzu oil popular in a variety of health and beauty applications. While
most citrus peels yield quite high yields, it takes about 300 kilograms of
grated Yuzu peel to produce 2 kilograms of Yuzu essential oil[9,10,11].
