The genus Cryptocarya of the Lauraceae family comprises more than 350 species distributed throughout the tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions of the world. Several species of this genus have been used extensively as traditional medicines in a number of ethnobotanical practices. The Massoia tree, C. massoy, is a species endemic to the island of New Guinea between 400 m and 1000 m altitude.
Massoia Bark is mostly used in the perfume and flavor industries, but there are useful applications in beauty as Massoia essential oil. Massoia contains a high concentration of lactones which can irritate the skin, especially in fair-skinned people, and therefore it is safe to use this oil if it is very diluted. Massoia oil is obtained from the extraction of massoia stem bark by steam distillation. The resulting oil is yellowish to dark brown in color, and has a characteristic aroma and aroma of lactones. Massoia essential oil also has sedative properties and can be used to relax and relieve stress from the brain and nerves to promote better sleep. Great when used in a diffuser to create a relaxing atmosphere.
