Zingiber cassumunar Roxb. (Plai) is a medicinal plant that is widely cultivated in Asia and its essential oil has been reported for several biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-oxidant effects. Indonesian ethnic use it as laxatives, fever, jaundice, and headaches. In various scientific publications, Z. montanum is also known as Z. cassumunar or Z. purpureum, so they are synonyms, that is, one species has more than one scientific name. Bangle oil is extracted from its rhizomes by the steam distillation method, the resulting oil is colorless to pale yellow and produces a distinctive bangle aroma. Plai essential oil has long been used by Thai massage therapists for its potent pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, rejuvenating, and relaxing properties.
