THERAPEUTIC
BENEFITS:
In Ayurveda, Betel Leaf has been described as an aromatic stimulo-carminative, astringent and aphrodisiac. Apart from that, Betel Leaf Essential Oil is also reported to have antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and radioprotective properties. The active ingredients of Piper betle oil obtained from betel leaves are the main group of Allyl Benzene compounds: Chavibetol, Chavicol, Estragole, Eugenol and Methyl Eugenol which exert strong antioxidant activity through superior radical scavenging and immune modulating potential[1].

DESCRIPTION:
Piper betel oil comes
from the heart-shaped leaves of the betel plant which have been harvested and
used for centuries in traditional medicine. Betel's natural chemical compounds
are antimicrobial, antifungal, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Our betel leaf
oil is obtained from steam distillation of red betel leaves to obtain the oil.
The resulting oil is medium brown to bright yellow depending on the type of
leaf used. The smell is sharp and the taste is bitter. This oil is widely used
as an ingredient in perfume, aromatherapy, and in the pharmaceutical industry
[1].
BOTANICAL AT A
GLANCE:
This red betel plant
is a climbing plant, which grows to a height of 10 feet or more, is easy to
grow in tropical areas (especially humid areas), and is propagated using
cuttings. The upper surface of this leaf is dark green combined with dark red
veins, while the lower surface of the leaf is purplish red [2].
HISTORY:
Red betel's reputation
is worldwide. The Chinese call it Guan Shang hu Jiao and in England it is
called ornamental pepper (English). In Indonesia, red betel has many local
names, namely base in Bali, suruh or sedah in Java, seureuh in West Java,
ranub in Aceh. In other parts of Sumatra, this plant also has several local
names, as is the case in Sulawesi or Maluku.
Betel originates from
the Sabah region of Sarawak, and has long spread to Southeast Asia, China,
India, East Africa, and even to the islands of the West Pacific. The Piperaceae
family is estimated to have variations of up to 1,000 – 2,000 types. On the island
of Java alone there are 23 types. It can adapt to coastal environments to
mountainous areas above 3,000 meters.
Betel grows creeping.
Like the betel family, the red one has heart-shaped leaves. In terms of shape,
it is no different from green betel. The most obvious difference is in the
color of the leaves and stems. Red betel has a round stem. The stems are purplish
green and have no flowers.
In red betel, the
color of the upper leaves is green with a grayish white pattern. The underside
of the leaves is red. The leaves are slimy, bitter, and have a fragrant betel
aroma. The stems are striped and segmented with nodes 5-10 cm apart. At each joint
of the stem, roots grow. Betel prefers shady places. If there is too much sun,
the stems dry out quickly.
Red betel has been
used for medicine for a long time and is known to contain important ingredients
such as essential oils, alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins-polyphenols, steroids
and neolignans. Pharmacological testing has proven that red betel has anti-inflammatory
(anti-inflammatory), antimicrobial, anti-fungal (anti-fungal), analgesic (fever
medicine), anti-proliferative and even antioxidant properties.
A number of studies
have also proven that there is a eugenol compound in betel leaves which has
antiseptic properties. It is used in dental medicine as an antibacterial. The
eugenol content in betel plants is more than 42 percent. Eugenol is a compound
that can inhibit fungal growth. Triana Andayani et al from Brawijaya
University, 2014, proved that red betel leaf essential oil can be a natural
preservative for anchovies, related to its ability as an antimicrobial. The
growth of putrefactive bacteria is hampered due to the influence of these
essential oils. Betel oil has been used in various traditional medicines such
as Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic systems and folklore medicines of
Latin America and the West Indies. Fresh, aromatic betel leaves are consumed as
a chewing agent and for medicinal purposes in Southeast Asian countries.
